Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming how we work, communicate and do business. Unfortunately, scammers are evolving just as quickly. One of the fastest-growing fraud trends today is AI-powered impersonation scams, in which criminals use advanced technology to convincingly pose as trusted organizations—including banks—to trick people into sharing sensitive information or sending money.

At Busey Bank, our fraud team is closely monitoring this trend. While these scams are still emerging, they represent a high-impact risk for consumers, and understanding how they work is one of the best ways to stay protected.

What are AI-Powered Impersonation Scams?

AI-powered impersonation scams occur when fraudsters use artificial intelligence tools to replicate human voices, create realistic videos or generate synthetic identities that appear legitimate. With only a short audio clip or video sample—often pulled from social media or public sources—scammers can produce messages that sound or look convincingly real.

In a banking context, this might include:

    • A phone call that sounds like a bank employee warning of “suspicious activity”
    • A voicemail that appears to come from a trusted financial institution
    • A video or message that mimics official branding and tone

The goal is always the same—to create urgency and fear so victims act quickly before they have time to question whether the interaction is legitimate.

Why These Scams are on the Rise

AI tools are becoming more accessible, affordable and sophisticated, lowering the barrier for criminals to deploy them at scale. At the same time, people are increasingly accustomed to digital communication, making it easier for scams to blend into everyday interactions.

These scams are particularly dangerous because they:

    • Sound and look more authentic than traditional fraud attempts
    • Can bypass skepticism built around obvious “red flags”
    • Exploit trust in well-known institutions

This makes AI-powered impersonation a key future threat—one that financial institutions and consumers alike need to be prepared for.

How to Spot the Warning Signs

Even the most advanced scams tend to share common characteristics. Be cautious if you encounter:

    • Urgent requests demanding immediate action
    • Pressure to share personal or account information
    • Requests for one-time passcodes, PINs or login credentials
    • Instructions to move money quickly or secretly
    • Messages discouraging you from contacting your bank directly

Always remember that legitimate banks will never pressure you to act immediately or ask for sensitive information in this way.

How to Protect Yourself

While AI-powered scams may be sophisticated, strong habits remain your best defense:

    • Pause before you act. Urgency is a hallmark of fraud.
    • Verify independently. If you receive a suspicious call or message, contact your bank using a trusted phone number or website.
    • Limit what you share online. Public audio and video clips can be used to build AI impersonations.
    • Stay informed. Awareness is one of the most effective fraud prevention tools.
